Boxes in Fields needs potable water. It has been stated numerous times since the beginning and four years into the this adventure, water is still a constant source of anxiety. With the Work Box Rain Water Collection System fully functioning and collecting water through eight downspouts, the water that is collected needs to drinkable. We may not be able to control what is blown onto the roof but can control what is leaked into the roof.

Protecting against harsh chemicals, a potable silicone roof coat was “poured” on the roof.

In terms of work, this was a fairly easy job only taking three hours. Use a solo cup to pour out small batches, use a brush to get into tight spots, and apply with a paint roller to move around into even thickness.

In terms of heat reduction effectiveness, the results were immediate. Not even tested at peak summer heat, the box roof went from 109℉ to 93℉. Amazing stuff, this roof coat.

The next day a second coat was applied as there were areas where the proper thickness was achieved.

Immediately upon stepping onto the roof a tactical situation developed. Bright white walls do not even come close to the level of white on this roof coat. Hats were not worn to eliminate glare bounce back on the face and two pairs of sunglasses were taped together and worn to allow vision. Seeing was UBER important as the next step could be fatal.

With some quick improvising on the Planner’s part, recycled ice bags saved the day. Slippery as snot on the roof, extra care was taken to ensure proper distance was kept from the edge of the box.

Here’s to years of safe water collection, heat reduction, and rusty roof protection.
